Trailer Hitch Wiring Keeps you Safe and Legal
Trailer hitch wiring can seem like a daunting task but it is the thing
that keeps you legal and safe when you're towing your vehicle so it is a
challenge that is not really a choice. It is, of course, possible to have it
done by professional installers but it really isn't as complicated as it seems
and you will save yourself some money as well as acquaint yourself with the
workings if you learn to do it yourself.
There are several online websites that offer step-by-step instruction on how to
get the wiring right. As with any electrical procedure, the process is not an
approximate one.
Before you get started you need to gather together the equipment that you will
be using. This list is headed by the all important trailer-light converter kit
that is the key player in the process. You will also need test lights so that
you can check that you are on the right track as you splice wires, a screw
driver and some pliers and wire cutters.
What you are essentially doing is installing an adapter that allows your trailer
lights to work together with your vehicle's taillights. Once you install the
adapter it needs to be plugged into a fixture on the trailer to connect the
wiring.
You will need to purchase a light kit for your trailer that is compatible with
the car and the trailer. Your vehicle may have a specific one that needs to be
used. Your vehicle owner's manual will come in handy here with some clear
pointers on the wiring requirements and process.
Once you have the correct light kit you can simply follow the directions that
come with it in order to do the trailer hitch wiring. Remember to use the test
lights to determine that you have joined the correct wires. Always double-check
your rear lights on the vehicle and trailer before undertaking any trip.
