There are two types of hitches, weight carrying hitches and weight distributing hitches.  Weight carrying hitches attach to the frame of the towing vehicle and whatever you are towing.  These are best suited for small and medium size loads.  Weight distributing hitches are used in heavier trailers.  They will even out the load between wheels of tow vehicles and the wheels of the trailer.
