Trailer Hitch Machismo For Ford Windstar
Vans are spacious, comfortable family cars that are not particularly well known for their powerful towing capability. Despite this the Ford Windstar trailer hitch for the 3.8 V6 engine can tow up to 3,500lbs. This is the weight of the smallest, lightest travel trailers or possibly a small boat.
To rise to this towing challenge the Windstar usually uses a Class III tow hitch in the "receiver style". The Class II would also do the trick but the Class III hitches are more robust and would be strong enough to compensate for the Windstar's lack of towing machismo.
This Class III receiver hitch uses standard 2" ball mounts and long wide frame brackets for maximum strength and load capacity. The smaller 3.0 V6 Windstar could use a Class II or III receiver hitch but the towing capacity, at 2,000lbs, is substantially smaller.
It is recommended that the Windstar tow vehicle further supplement its basic tow package with a weight-distributing hitch that will help to stabilize the vehicle and prevent oscillation. This will increase the Gross Towing Weight to 10,000lbs with a weight-carrying capacity of 3,000 to 6,000lbs and a tongue weight of 300 to 600lbs.
The trailer hitch for Ford Windstar attaches to the vehicle's frame with minimal to no drilling needed. The long, wide frame brackets assist with load distribution giving maximum strength. Despite this Windstar drivers should be conservative about towing weight so that the vehicle will not be pushed close to its limits.
