Trailer Hitch Balls: Getting it Right
You would be forgiven for thinking that there was not a whole world of variety and choice in the selection of trailer hitch balls. You would also be right. Still, there are some things you should know when it comes to these essential players in the tow hitch scenario.
Like any other balls, you will know if you have the wrong one. The effect will be anything from catastrophic to mildly irritating. Hitch balls come in several different guises: the regular, long shank, hi-rise and heat-treated. Many different variables determine the kind of hitch ball needed for the job and the clues are everywhere.
First you will have to determine just what gross trailer weight you will need this ball to accommodate. This is the weight of the trailer when fully loaded and working. The weight to be towed will also be a function of the towing vehicle's towing capacity.
The drawbar-ball mount platform will tell you the rest. The thickness of it will determine what shank length you require and the hole-size will tell you what diameter you need.
The actual size of the trailer hitch balls is determined by the size of the trailer coupler socket. Some manufacturers offer an option for interchangeable hitch balls that allow for multiple towing options and can be changed within seconds and without the use of tools. Hitch balls must be kept greased in order to allow the trailer hitch to move without sticking.
